Walleye an over grown Perch?
The walleye is the largest member of the perch family in North America. This group also includes Sauger (sometimes mistaken for Walleye) Darters and Yellow Perch.
It is not a pike. It has sharp strong canines lining its powerful jaw these teeth resemble the teeth of the northern pike and the Muskellunge this is probably where the misconception originated from.
. The Walleye has thick, white fillets which have a very good flavor. These fish have a slender shape. There coloring varies greatly and is unique to the clarity and color of the waters in which they live. They have and elusive nature which makes it the ultimate prize among anglers.
The average walleye caught and kept is about 14 inches long and weighs slightly more than 1 pound. The walleye is named for its pearlescent eye, which is caused by a reflective layer of pigment, called the tapetum lucidum that helps it see and feed at night or in murky water.
